Our adventure began on a new train route, which took 7.5 hours from Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri, where we relaxed, watched the world go by with delicious food and drink.

Our destination was Siliguri for a dose of Diwali magic, enjoying fireworks and drinks on the roof terrace of the Lemon Tree Hotel.

The next day arrived and it was time to head into the Himalayas; but first, we visited the monastery just down the road from our hotel in Silguri.
From there, on route we paused to look at lush tea plantations and enjoyed lunch at the charming Cochran Palace.

Then, the UNESCO-designated Darjeeling Himalayan Railway led us to Darjeeling on its famed “toy train.” The scenic route paralleled a bustling road, but the historic charm made up for it.

We started the next morning early, climbing Tiger Hill to watch a breathtaking sunrise.

Another train ride took us to Ghum, India’s highest railway station, this time on a classic 1899 steam engine.

Happily during the train journey, some cloud moved away from the highest peaks of the Himalayas.

Free time allowed us to explore Darjeeling’s pedestrian streets and sip sunset cocktails at Glenary’s rooftop.

Our final day started with a walking tour, then we went onto tea tasting, an explore of the local market and a Tibetan feast at Kunga’s, where the momos stole the show. We were able to enjoy some live music and dance in the main area.

We wrapped up with more sundowners and shopping, soaking in Darjeeling’s easygoing vibe despite the traffic. Between mountain views, local flavors, and memorable experiences, Darjeeling left a lasting impression!
